What do lice look like?
Lice develop in three stages: nits, nymphs, and adults.
Nits:
Nits are lice eggs. They are hard to see and are often mistaken for dandruff or droplets of hairspray. Nits are found firmly attached to the hair shaft, about ¼ inch away from the scalp. They are oval and usually yellow to white. Nits must be laid by live lice. You cannot “catch nits.” Once laid, it takes 7-10 days for a nit to hatch.

How are head lice spread?
People can catch lice by coming into direct contact with an affected person, clothing, carpet, hairbrush, towel, couch, pillow, etc.
What are the treatment options?
1. Chemical Shampoos
Health Hazard – Pesticides, the lice killing agent used in over-the-counter commercial lice treatment products, are known to be toxic to humans, and should not be used by pregnant women or young children. Some side effects reported to the NPA include behavioral changes, ADD, seizures and cancer. In addition, resistance to chemical treatments is on the rise, and therefore no such product can be considered 100% safe or effective, contrary to what the packaging may claim.
Even the newer prescription lice medications that claim to be non-toxic, openly admit that their products are effective “only when used in conjunction with a fine-tooth comb to remove lice and nits”. Missing even a single nit can lead to re-infestation within a matter of weeks.
2. Manual Comb-Outs
This is a complete and methodical combing of the entire head, using a specialized comb designed specifically for lice and nit removal. Together with a trained eye and experienced hand, this method is the only one proven to be 100% safe and effective.
What about the house?
Here are some tips:
1. Wash all clothing and linens used by the affected person. Be sure to use HOT water and HIGH HEAT in the dryer.
2. Non-washable items can be dry-cleaned OR sealed in a plastic bag for 48 hours.
3. Brushes and combs should be discarded or soaked in boiling water for 5 minutes.
4. Vacuum (wash) all floors and furniture. |

Nymphs:
Nits hatch into nymphs. Nymphs are immature adult lice that mature into adults about 7 days after hatching. To live, nymphs must feed on human blood.
Adults:
An adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed, with six clawed legs, and a reddish-brown color. Lice are crawling insects that cannot jump, or fly. They feed on human blood and live for approximately 30 days on a host. The NPA (The National Pediculosis Association) suggests that, in most cases, a head louse will not survive more than 24 hours off a human host. A female louse can lay up to 100 nits. |
